ABSTRACT

Students that graduate with degrees in science may pursue a variety of career roles. Many of these roles may require them to read primary scientific literature (PSL) or even write up their own manuscripts for submission. While literature has recognized the importance of integrating PSL into undergraduate curriculum, it is also important for students to recognize the writing process that one may need to take part in if they seek to disseminate their own publications. This article will go through a research assignment that was given to an introductory journal club class for biology majors at a large R1 Hispanic-serving Institution. This assignment was designed to mirror the publication process at many journals including drafting a manuscript, integrating editor recommendations, and drafting a letter to the editor. In the end, students produce a review paper while becoming more familiar with the traditional publication process. In turn, this can prepare them to eventually seek to publish their own manuscripts.

ABSTRACT

Reading, presenting, and discussing peer-reviewed scientific reports, case studies, and reviews are essential to modern biology education. These exercises model crucial aspects of students' future professional activities and introduce the students to the current scientific concepts and methodology, data analysis, and presentation. A common format for working with primary literature is a journal club: presenting and discussing research literature in front of peers, which has many merits. However, in large modern classrooms, this format is very time-consuming and stressful, especially since presenting is not a commonly taught skill. We argue that student groups for whom the current educational and professional paradigms present a challenge due to a historical lack of representation or wellness issues are deprived of a key educational opportunity. To solve this problem, we formulated an approach called Peer-Reviewed Presentation Exchange (PRPE), which focuses on collaborative analysis, presentation, and review of research literature that includes (i) voice-narrated research presentations by students, (ii) checklists generated by the instructor to establish expectations for an informative presentation or review, and (iii) presentation assignment and peer review process. We tested this approach in an undergraduate cell biology class over 3 years. Pre- and post-assessments show significant gains in self-efficacy and knowledge not only by students who presented but also by the students who reviewed the presentations; therefore, peer-reviewed presentations are an effective tool for learning. Exit surveys show that the approach is seen as beneficial by most students. Our approach allows every student to speak and ask questions in a low-stress creative environment. It is an excellent customizable, trackable, and scalable low-stakes assessment tool.

ABSTRACT

The contemporary agricultural supply chain necessitates the integration of information and communication technologies to effectively mitigate the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change and rising global demand for food products. Furthermore, recent developments in information and communication technologies, such as blockchain, big data analytics, the internet of things, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, etc., have made this transformation possible. Each of these technologies plays a particular role in enabling the agriculture supply chain ecosystem to be intelligent enough to handle today's world's challenges. Thus, this paper reviews the crucial information and communication technologies-enabled agriculture supply chains to understand their potential uses and contemporary developments. The review is supported by 57 research papers from the Scopus database. Five research areas analyze the applications of the technology reviewed in the agriculture supply chain: food safety and traceability, security and information system management, wasting food, supervision and tracking, agricultural businesses and decision-making, and other applications not explicitly related to the agriculture supply chain. The study also emphasizes how information and communication technologies can help agriculture supply chains and promote agriculture supply chain decarbonization. An information and communication technologies application framework for a decarbonized agriculture supply chain is suggested based on the research's findings. The framework identifies the contribution of information and communication technologies to decision-making in agriculture supply chains. The review also offers guidelines to academics, policymakers, and practitioners on managing agriculture supply chains successfully for enhanced agricultural productivity and decarbonization.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In India research on health issues of transgender populations are very recent and limited though transgenders are an important sub-group of the population. Hence, this study attempts to understand the state of transgender health research in India through a systematic review of literature. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using bibliometric analysis. Initially, 132 studies were identified, and only 37 articles meeting selection criteria were subsequently selected for review using PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The research landscape was examined with tools such as Biblioshiny, Arc-GIS (10.1), and Vos-Viewer. Results: The review highlights that existing literature on transgender health in India mainly focuses on sexual health while neglecting their overall health status. It also emphasises the skewed geographical coverage of these studies. Based on the analysis, the interdisciplinary nature of the subject is illustrated in a three-field plot and through term co-occurrence. These indicate the need for culture-specific gender-affirmative services promoting a holistic approach to comprehend the health of transgender populations in India. Conclusion: In India research on transgender health is lopsided and at an initial stage. There is a need to develop diverse research focus on various health issues of transgenders that should also be geographically representative. Future in-depth research on this subject will enable optimizing resource allocation, developing effective gender-inclusive policies, and support holistic planning for better health status of transgender people in India, and other countries with similar socio-cultural background.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease characterized by low bone mass, damaged bone microstructure, increased bone fragility, and susceptibility to fractures. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, a series of studies have reported deep learning applications in the screening and diagnosis of osteoporosis. The aim of this review was to summary the application of deep learning methods in the radiologic diagnosis of osteoporosis. METHODS: We conducted a two-step literature search using the PubMed and Web of Science databases. In this review, we focused on routine radiologic methods, such as X-ray, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, used to opportunistically screen for osteoporosis. RESULTS: A total of 40 studies were included in this review. These studies were divided into three categories: osteoporosis screening (n = 20), bone mineral density prediction (n = 13), and osteoporotic fracture risk prediction and detection (n = 7). CONCLUSIONS: Deep learning has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for osteoporosis screening. However, clinical commercialization of a diagnostic model for osteoporosis remains a challenge.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of offensive content on online communication and social media platforms is growing more and more common, which makes its detection difficult, especially in multilingual settings. The term "Offensive Language" encompasses a wide range of expressions, including various forms of hate speech and aggressive content. Therefore, exploring multilingual offensive content, that goes beyond a single language, focus and represents more linguistic diversities and cultural factors. By exploring multilingual offensive content, we can broaden our understanding and effectively combat the widespread global impact of offensive language. This survey examines the existing state of multilingual offensive language detection, including a comprehensive analysis on previous multilingual approaches, and existing datasets, as well as provides resources in the field. We also explore the related community challenges on this task, which include technical, cultural, and linguistic ones, as well as their limitations. Furthermore, in this survey we propose several potential future directions toward more efficient solutions for multilingual offensive language detection, enabling safer digital communication environment worldwide.

ABSTRACT

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is used as a traditional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, it can cause serious adverse reactions, including hyperpigmentation of the skin and bull's-eye macular lesions. Here, we present a case of HCQ-induced hyperpigmentation of the skin and bull's-eye macular lesions in a patient who received HCQ for RA. A 65-year-old female patient developed blurred vision and hyperpigmentation of multiple areas of skin over the body for one month after 3 years of HCQ treatment for RA. Based on clinical presentation, ophthalmological examination and dermatopathological biopsy, a diagnosis of drug-induced cutaneous hyperpigmentation and bullous maculopathy of the right eye was made. After discontinuation of HCQ and treatment with iguratimod tablets, the hyperpigmentation of the patient 's skin was gradually reduced, and the symptoms of blurred vision were not significantly improved. We also reviewed the available literature on HCQ-induced cutaneous hyperpigmentation and bull's-eye macular lesions and described the clinical features of HCQ-induced cutaneous hyperpigmentation and bull's-eye macular lesions. In conclusion, clinicians should be aware of early cutaneous symptoms and HCQ-associated ophthalmotoxicity in patients with rheumatic diseases on HCQ sulphate and should actively monitor patients, have them undergo regular ophthalmological examinations and give appropriate treatment to prevent exacerbation of symptoms.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Health technology assessment (HTA) agencies express a clear preference for randomized controlled trials when assessing the comparative efficacy of two or more treatments. However, an indirect treatment comparison (ITC) is often necessary where a direct comparison is unavailable or, in some cases, not possible. Numerous ITC techniques are described in the literature. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to identify all the relevant literature on existing ITC techniques, provide a comprehensive description of each technique and evaluate their strengths and limitations from an HTA perspective in order to develop guidance on the most appropriate method to use in different scenarios. METHODS: Electronic database searches of Embase and PubMed, as well as grey literature searches, were conducted on 15 November 2021. Eligible articles were peer-reviewed papers that specifically described the methods used for different ITC techniques and were written in English. The review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 73 articles were included in the SLR, reporting on seven different ITC techniques. All reported techniques were forms of adjusted ITC. Network meta-analysis (NMA) was the most frequently described technique (in 79.5% of the included articles), followed by matching-adjusted indirect comparison (MAIC) (30.1%), network meta-regression (24.7%), the Bucher method (23.3%), simulated treatment comparison (STC) (21.9%), propensity score matching (4.1%) and inverse probability of treatment weighting (4.1%). The appropriate choice of ITC technique is critical and should be based on the feasibility of a connected network, the evidence of heterogeneity between and within studies, the overall number of relevant studies and the availability of individual patient-level data (IPD). MAIC and STC were found to be common techniques in the case of single-arm studies, which are increasingly being conducted in oncology and rare diseases, whilst the Bucher method and NMA provide suitable options where no IPD is available. CONCLUSION: ITCs can provide alternative evidence where direct comparative evidence may be missing. ITCs are currently considered by HTA agencies on a case-by-case basis; however, their acceptability remains low. Clearer international consensus and guidance on the methods to use for different ITC techniques is needed to improve the quality of ITCs submitted to HTA agencies. ITC techniques continue to evolve quickly, and more efficient techniques may become available in the future.

ABSTRACT

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is very common, especially in young athletic individuals who injure themselves during sports involving pivoting actions. Management options include conservative management, which involves progressive physical therapy, educating the patient on how to prevent instability, and the use of a hinged knee brace. Surgical management involves reconstruction of the torn ligament using an autograft or an allograft and ACL repair where the torn ligament is affixed back to the tibia or femur. The choice of management depends on the severity of the injury, other injuries in associated structures, the level of fitness, and the athletic goals of the patient. Many studies exist on the management choice of ACL injury, but no clear consensus prevails. This study will examine the effectiveness of conservative versus surgical management. A literature review will be performed to identify appropriate papers which compare and evaluate the two approaches. A literature search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies comparing the conservative to surgical management of ACL injury was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Patient eligibility criteria included individuals older than 15 with an isolated, recent ACL injury diagnosis via an appropriate clinical test, MRI, or arthroscopy. Studies were eligible if they were using appropriate surgical or conservative methods, as mentioned previously, and measuring results via appropriate scores, tools, and methods that will be presented below. The follow-up timeline would be from presentation time until at least two years. Five papers were found to be eligible. Overall, these papers included 462 patients. Two studies measuring overall knee symptoms, function, and sports activities using the International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (IKDC) score found that the operated group had a significantly higher score. The other two studies measured overall knee function and health using the Tegner & Lysholm and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) scores. In both papers, no significant difference was found between the two groups. Regarding Tegner's activity score, only one paper had significant findings. A significantly longer period to return to sports activities was observed in the operative group. Stability was significantly higher in all papers in the operated group. Osteoarthritis was measured using different tools in each paper. Only one paper found a significantly higher risk in the operated group. Only one paper indicated significantly more complications in the operated group regarding side effects. Overall, very few differences were observed between the two treatment groups. The most significant differences observed were the higher stability and the longer recovery period in patients undergoing surgery. Large RCTs following patients for enough time are needed to prove if surgical treatment offers significant benefits over conservative treatment.

ABSTRACT

The more science advances, the more questions are asked. This compounding growth can make it difficult to keep up with current research directions. Furthermore, this difficulty is exacerbated for junior researchers who enter fields with already large bases of potentially fruitful research avenues. In this paper, we propose a novel task and a recommender system for research directions, RecSOI, that draws from statements of ignorance (SOIs) found in the research literature. By building researchers' profiles based on textual elements, RecSOI generates personalized recommendations of potential research directions tailored to their interests. In addition, RecSOI provides context for the recommended SOIs, so that users can quickly evaluate how relevant the research direction is for them. In this paper, we provide an overview of RecSOI's functioning, implementation, and evaluation, demonstrating its effectiveness in guiding researchers through the vast landscape of potential research directions.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of a 31-year-old gravida 2 para 1 female presenting to the optician with a two-week history of blurred vision and persistent headaches at 29 weeks gestation. Visual acuity on presentation was 6/100 in the right eye and 6/24 in the left eye. Fundoscopy of both eyes revealed serous retinal detachment in the absence of background retinal changes. On urgent admission to the maternity assessment unit, blood pressure was 189/126 mmHg and urine dipstick revealed 4+ proteinuria. Due to recurrent poor foetal heart rate variability on cardiotocography monitoring, an emergency caesarean was conducted. Sixteen hours following delivery, visual symptoms had improved, and clinical examination revealed normal blood pressure. An optical coherence tomography scan performed three months later was dry bilaterally with minor retinal pigment epithelium clumping. Serous retinal detachment involves the separation of the neurosensory retinal layer from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium. It is rare in pre-eclampsia but can be seen in patients with severe disease. The presentation of serous retinal detachment includes acute visual loss, reduced visual acuity, floaters, and flashing lights appearing in the vision. Although alarming on initial presentation, resolution is commonly seen within a couple of days postpartum. The pathogenic mechanism for serous retinal detachment development is widely discussed and thought to include changes to the choroidal circulation. Overall, although often self-resolving, a move to thorough antenatal care and vigilant monitoring in pre-eclamptic women is vital to prevent complications like this from occurring.

ABSTRACT

In recent decades, the term "ecosystem" has garnered substantial attention in scholarly and managerial discourse, featuring prominently in academic and applied contexts. While individual scholars have made significant contributions to the study of various types of ecosystem, there appears to be a research gap marked by a lack of comprehensive synthesis and refinement of findings across diverse ecosystems. This paper systematically addresses this gap through a hybrid methodology, employing bibliometric and content analyses to systematically review the literature from 1993 to 2023. The primary research aim is to critically examine theoretical studies on different ecosystem types, specifically focusing on business, innovation, and platform ecosystems. The methodology of this study involves a content review of the identified literature, combining quantitative bibliometric analyses to differentiate patterns and content analysis for in-depth exploration. The core findings center on refining and summarizing the definitions of business, innovation, and platform ecosystems, shedding light on both commonalities and distinctions. Notably, the research unveils shared characteristics such as openness and diversity across these ecosystems while highlighting significant differences in terms of participants and objectives. Furthermore, the paper delves into the interconnections within these three ecosystem types, offering insights into their dynamics and paving the way for discussions on future research directions. This comprehensive examination not only advances our understanding of business, innovation, and platform ecosystems but also lays the groundwork for future scholarly inquiries in this dynamic and evolving field.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: In order to share their knowledge, sterilization unit managers publish the results of their work in journals or at scientific conferences. The aim of Enthalpies is to list all such work in a single database. The work presented describes the construction of this database and the assessment of its feasibility for the washing step. METHODS: The first step was to carry out a literature review. Only articles published over 10 years (2013-2023) in connection with the ten-year washing stage were included. Then, each publication was categorized, coded, graded and summarized by a pharmacist-internal pair. All this data was collated in an Excel® spreadsheet, and from the data categorization a tree structure was created, enabling the interface between the user and the platform hosting Enthalpies to be understood. RESULTS: 81 publications were identified. These were categorized into 6 themes and 27 sub-themes. A reading grid was drawn up for each publication. Genially®, an online platform, was chosen to host our database. CONCLUSION: Enthalpies was not designed to issue recommendations for best practice. However, by collating published scientific data, this tool can be used to assist decision-making. It represents an innovative solution for providing a literature review in the field of hospital sterilization.

ABSTRACT

Background: A significant body of valuable data about the myxomycetes of Ukraine lies in a "grey zone". This encompasses undigitised historical books and articles published in languages such as Polish, French or German, as well as proceedings from local conferences, articles featured in local scientific journals and annual reports submitted to public authorities by employees of protected areas, published in Ukrainian or Russian. Yet, due to their exclusive existence in print and often the Cyrillic alphabet, these publications remain neither findable nor accessible to a wider audience. New information: The datasets presented here aim to summarise over 150 years of myxomycetes research in Ukraine. The majority of the data has been extracted from published literature sources spanning the years 1842 to 2023, with a minor supplement from unpublished herbarium specimens. The datasets include 5036 georeferenced occurrences, 339 taxa and 91 literature sources. Seventy-one of the used literature sources, mostly published before 2010, were uploaded to Zenodo and are available in open access.

ABSTRACT

We aim to investigate the efficacy and safety of laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) in treating recurrent glioblastomas (rGBMs). A comprehensive search was conducted in four databases to identify studies published between January 2001 and June 2022 that reported prognosis information of rGBM patients treated with LITT as the primary therapy. The primary outcomes of interest were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) at 6 and 12 months after LITT intervention. Adverse events and complications were also evaluated. Eight eligible non-comparative studies comprising 128 patients were included in the analysis. Seven studies involving 120 patients provided data for the analysis of PFS. The pooled PFS rate at 6 months after LITT was 25% (95% CI 15-37%, I2 = 53%), and at 12 months, it was 9% (95% CI 4-15%, I2 = 24%). OS analysis was performed on 54 patients from six studies, with an OS rate of 92% (95% CI 84-100%, I2 = 0%) at 6 months and 42% (95% CI 13-73%, I2 = 67%) at 12 months after LITT. LITT demonstrates a favorable safety profile with low complication rates and promising tumor control and overall survival rates in patients with rGBMs. Tumor volume and performance status are important factors that may influence the effectiveness of LITT in selected patients. Additionally, the combination of LITT with immune-based therapy holds promise. Further well-designed clinical trials are needed to expand the application of LITT in glioma treatment.

ABSTRACT

Information may be required within a short time-frame for making decisions about programmes and interventions in health professions education. Rapid research methods have been increasingly used in healthcare, especially for qualitative research studies and literature reviews. An essential aspect of using rapid research methods is pragmatism, in which there is a balance between the constraints of the short time frame (typically less than 3 months), the available resources, and the rigour for an appropriate standard of quality. Achieving this balance requires careful attention to the design of the research, including clarification of the decision-maker's information needs and the use of rapid methods for literature review, selection of participants, and data collection and analysis. The intention of the article is to provide a practical guide for how rapid research methods for qualitative research studies and literature reviews can be adapted for health professions education.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare acute-onset neurological disease with significant morbidity and mortality. The risk of GBS increases after delivery. Labor and delivery presents many possible risk factors for GBS. However, risk factors and prognosis of postpartum GBS remain unclear due to its low incidence. Here, we first present a patient with a history of postpartum GBS who returned for an elective repeat cesarean section (C-section). For her previous delivery, the patient received spinal anesthesia for an urgent C-section. She presented postpartum with jaw pain, facial palsy, respiratory difficulty, progressive bilateral lower extremity weakness, and areflexia. The diagnosis of GBS was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination, nerve conduction studies (NCS), and electromyography (EMG). Her symptoms of GBS improved after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment. The patient also had an Escherichia coli-positive urinary tract infection (UTI), which was treated with nitrofurantoin. For her repeat elective C-section, we performed a dural puncture epidural (DPE) anesthesia. After delivery, she was discharged to home uneventfully. She did not report any new neurological symptoms at her three-week follow-up. Here, we also review published cases of postpartum GBS and discuss peripartum anesthetic considerations for patients with GBS, aiming to inform clinical management of postpartum GBS in the future.

Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy treatment provided remotely via the Internet in the postoperative treatment of orthopedic patients and compare it with standard physiotherapy (face-to-face treatment or home-based treatment) in terms of motor performance, pain symptoms, and functional recovery. Methods: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Physiotherapy Evidence Database; EMBASE, SCOPUS, and CINHAL was conducted. Two independent reviewers performed study selection, data extraction, risk of bias (ROB) assessment using Cochrane ROB 2 tools, and summarize the results by Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation. Results: Eleven randomized controlled trial were selected. Pooled results showed improvement in motor performance in favor of the telerehabilitation group at 4-6 weeks (standardized mean difference -0.24, 95% confidence interval -0.45, -0.02, p = 0.03), and these differences were close to the minimum clinically important difference for Time Up and Go test. For pain and functional recovery, the results showed differences not statistically important. The certainty of evidence ranged from moderate to very low. Conclusion: For joint replacement patients, treatment conducted via telerehabilitation appears able to provide levels of motor performance better to that achieved through home-based treatment. In contrast, conclusive evidence that telerehabilitation is comparable to standard face-to-face treatment are not available.

ABSTRACT

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated neurodegenerative disease that involves attacks of inflammatory demyelination and axonal damage, with variable but continuous disability accumulation. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive method to characterize conduction loss and axonal damage in the corticospinal tract. TMS as a technique provides indices of corticospinal tract function that may serve as putative MS biomarkers. To date, no reviews have directly addressed the diagnostic performance of TMS in MS. The authors aimed to conduct a critical narrative review on the diagnostic performance of TMS in MS. Methods: The authors searched the Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for studies that reported the sensitivity and/or specificity of any reported TMS technique compared to established clinical MS diagnostic criteria. Studies were summarized and critically appraised for their quality and validity. Results: Seventeen of 1,073 records were included for data extraction and critical appraisal. Markers of demyelination and axonal damage-most notably, central motor conduction time (CMCT)-were specific, but not sensitive, for MS. Thirteen (76%), two (12%), and two (12%) studies exhibited high, unclear, and low risk of bias, respectively. No study demonstrated validity for TMS techniques as diagnostic biomarkers in MS. Conclusions: CMCT has the potential to: (1) enhance the specificity of clinical MS diagnostic criteria by "ruling in" true-positives, or (2) revise a diagnosis from relapsing to progressive forms of MS. However, there is presently insufficient high-quality evidence to recommend any TMS technique in the diagnostic algorithm for MS.

ABSTRACT

The anatomical terms plexus chor(i)oideus (CP) and tela chor(i)oidea (TC) are listed without explanations in the official nomenclature handbooks Terminologia Neuroanatomica and Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria. Definitions of CP and TC exhibit discrepancies in medical dictionaries and anatomy handbooks. The aim of our study was to analyse this problem in detail and to discuss a possible unified use of the terms in science and teaching. We conducted a systematic literature review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, identifying and analysing relevant scholarly articles. Additionally, comprehensive original handbooks on human and veterinary anatomy in English and other European languages were examined. The definitions of the terms CP and TC differed considerably between articles and did not match the most frequently given explanations in handbooks. In general use, it seems to have become accepted that TC represents the smooth, thin part of the roof of third and fourth ventricles, and CP the frond- or fringe-like vascularised structures invaginated into lateral, third and fourth ventricles. However, it is controversial which tissue layers should be included in their description. Etymologically, only the vascular network should be termed (choroid) plexus, but embryologically and functionally, epithelium, pial connective tissue and vascular network form an inseparable entity. Similarly, the smooth part of the ventricle roof consists of a (less) vascularised pia-derived stroma and lining epithelium. Including all these layers in CP as well as TC definition might be advisable and also corresponds to the use of the terms in clinical context.
